Sancreed Nature Weekend with Budding Nature

Supported by Sancreed Parish Nature Action Group and Sancreed Parish Council
Friday 12th – Sunday 14th June 2026

The weekend began with a nature-themed quiz at The Fountain Inn, Newbridge, in the east of the Parish. Resident Nick Taylor and Budding Nature put on a fun evening, packed with people enjoying the challenge of the six-round event. The Sancreed Snails took the trophy, which will be on display at Sancreed Village Hall. Thank you to Sancreed Parish Council for funding the trophy, chocolates and wooden spoons, and many thanks to Tracey at The Fountain for a great evening.

Saturday and Sunday were full of sunshine, with all events held at the Village Hall and its surrounds – well attended and much appreciated. A highlight for the organisers was the number of children who came with their families and joined in with such enthusiasm. Events included walks and talks to a meadow, Sancreed Beacon and Tony’s Wood; Tai Chi (TMW); Breathe with Nature workshops with Grounded Life; the Bug Box Challenge; and working with textiles for the Cornish Hedge project with Vicks from Treneere.

The evening talk, ‘Nature Recovery’, from Budding Nature drew a good crowd of 20+. Derek’s message about the importance of increasing biodiversity and bio-abundance was delivered with feeling and backed by scientific facts – and we all know we can help: however small the action, it makes a difference. An important takeaway was to stay positive and to support those making a positive contribution, such as the gardener encouraging wild flowers in their garden.

Pasties and dancing followed while we waited for the light to fade. Nick Taylor set up a moth light on a white sheet outside Sancreed Village Hall, and about 30 people strolled around Churchtown looking for bats and attracting moths for their 9pm buffet! Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle and Noctule bats were seen and heard on the detectors. The moth identifying was great fun – the moths having a short stay in the plastic containers while they were passed around and their wonderful features and names admired. The children quickly got the hang of a careful capture.

There are many people to thank: the Budding Nature team for their expertise, lovely attitude and generous resources; all our volunteers; our SPNAG steering group; our Tai Chi (TMW) and breathwork leaders; our bird guides; and our Village Hall committee kitchen helpers – and, of course, the fine, sunny weather.
